A successful speech is more than just the presentation of facts—it thrives on active interaction between the speaker and the audience. Without this eye contact, the speaker finds it difficult to convey content and objectives convincingly. Interaction with the audience and the rhetorical presence that comes with it are often more crucial to the success of a presentation than the purely logical content.
This is where the teleprompter (from the English “souffleur” or the Latin “promptus” for “resolute/ready”) comes in. It is the technical tool that makes it possible to deliver even complex texts extemporaneously while keeping one’s gaze constantly on the audience or the camera.

The history of the teleprompter began with simple paper strips and cue cards. The American Hubert Schlafly (1919–2011) invented the teleprompter in the 1950s together with Irving B. Kahn. Today, we use state-of-the-art digital systems that come in various forms:

In this setup, a mirror assembly is mounted directly in front of the lens. A monitor positioned below the lens reflects the text onto a glass panel. The speaker reads the text directly from the lens, which creates the impression of intense, direct eye contact for the audience. Ideal for lecterns at annual shareholder meetings or galas. Two discreet, lightly tinted glass panels on thin stands are positioned within the speaker’s field of vision. While the speaker reads the text on the panels, the view of the speaker remains completely clear and unobstructed for the audience and press cameras. - Preview Monitors (Stage Monitors):
At live events, the text can also be displayed on floor monitors (similar to PowerPoint presentations) to provide the speaker with additional orientation within the room.
